Leucadendron Safari Sunset
Leucadendron laureolum 'Safari Sunset'

Year round colour and stunning long stemmed cut flowers too. This tall growing leucadendron is famous as a cut flower, but it’s also outstanding for sunny, open situations in gardens with good drainage. In winter the red colours of the big bracts are particularly intense, but it’s pretty spectacular at any season.

Useful for the background of a shrub border, ‘Safari Sunset ‘ is in its element where the conditions are a bit difficult - beach gardens, poor soils, dry banks, exposed situations. Wherever it’s grown, lots of sun is essential. Hard pruning as soon as the bushes show signs of becoming a bit woody and straggly will quickly bring about bushy and vigorous new growth. As with all leucadendrons, try to avoid fertilisers - they really do like poor soils and are easily killed with plant foods. Try mixing ‘Safari Sunset’ with other leucadendrons and grevilleas too in sunny, dry, well-drained situations and you will have a glorious winter garden. ‘Safari Sunset’ is occasionally seen as a hedge - there’s something different to contemplate!
