Polemonium Bressingham Purple
Polemonium caeruleum 'Bressingham Purple'
One to grow for foliage and flowers

Keen gardeners tend to fall in love with blue flowers at the drop of a hat. There’s something about the best blue flowered plants that makes them irresistible and this new perennial, Polemonium ‘Bressingham Purple’, will quickly become one of the ‘must-have’ garden blues. But it has more than just flower appeal - the finely divided, shapely foliage is a striking deep purple, a colour that’s very fashionable indeed for plants these days.

The foliage is a feature of this cold hardy little plant from spring to autumn. The colour will vary a bit according to how much light it receives. In shade it goes green in summer, but if it has sun for most of the day the intense colour will remain throughout the season. The eye-catching flowers, which have golden anthers to provide the perfect bit of contrast with the blue, are there from early summer, lasting for many weeks. This is a smallish plant, so it will need to be positioned where it won’t be swamped by tall growing or overly vigorous plants. It likes a reasonably rich soil that doesn’t dry out in summer. It does well in a pot, providing it is watered regularly. In the garden it looks good with all sorts of compact plants such as Heucheras with wine coloured foliage, the dwarf, fine foliage, gold and green grass Acorus ‘Ogon’, miniature daylilies, red or blue pansies and violas and fine stemmed, dark foliaged, appropriately named Cosmos ‘Hot Chocolate’.
