Scabious Butterfly Blue
Scabious columbaria 'Butterfly Blue'
Famous for its generosity!

Famous for its generous and lengthy flowering, this low growing perennial is very easy to grow. Just pop it into a sunny spot in good soil and enjoy. Increase the pleasure by combining it with other low growing, remarkably free flowering perennials such as the dwarf, deep violet-blue Salvia ‘Marcus’, similarly coloured but large flowered and sweetly scented Heliotrope ‘Baby Marine’, dwarf daylilies, sky blue Tweedia caerulea, Cosmos ‘Hot Chocolate’ which has a scent to match the flower colour, the little, deep green leafed daisy bush Felicia ‘Golden Sapphire’ and Brachycome varieties such as ‘Break O’Day’ which have little daisy flowers above fine, ferny foliage.

Other ideas for using Scabiosa ‘Blue Butterfly’ could include combining it with small, blue foliage grasses such as the native Festuca coxii and with low growing, ground covering plants such as pale blue flowered Bacopa ‘Blue Showers’ or the white, almost ever-flowering Bacopa ‘Blizzard’. Another white flowered plant to combine it with is the diminutive native shrub Parahabe ‘Snowflake’ which is all class, with its narrow, deep green foliage and pretty, small, white flowers.

Scabiosa can even provide a touch of formality when used to line a path or as an edging planting for a garden bed. If background plantings of taller, free flowering perennials are created then a long season of interest is assured.

Another idea, good for small gardens, is to mingle several Scabiosa ‘Blue Butterfly’ with miniature roses which are noted for their ability to go on flowering without pause throughout summer and on into autumn.
