Lavender Sidonie
Lavender pinnata 'Sidonie'
Tall stemmed Lavender is all Charm

The very long stemmed, lanky flowering habit of Lavender ‘Sidonie’ makes it a very useful plant where the casual, cottage, romantic style of garden is enjoyed. Try it with dark red roses, purple penstemons, scarlet Alstroemerias such as the prolific flowering ‘Red Baron’, all-summer-flowering Gaura ‘So White’, the stunning new single flowered Dahlia ‘Scarlet Fern’, which flowers on and on through summer and doesn’t need staking, Polemonium ‘Blue Dove’, and the sprawling, ground covering, large blue flowered Geranium ‘Rozanne’.

Or you can contrast Lavender ‘Sidonie’ with the golden fruits of ‘Meyer’ lemons or the rich green coloured foliage and leaves of a lime tree. Include a few other special perennials in the planting scheme, such as Centaurea ‘Gold Bullion’ which has blue flowers and golden foliage, and Dahlia ‘Knockout’ which has mahogany black foliage and bright yellow single flowers.

Lavender ‘Sidonie’ is also good to grow with silver foliage plants, such as Astelia ‘Silver Spears’, and with native flaxes such as the handsome ‘Cream Delight’. Other foliage plants to group it with include Nandina ‘Gulfstream’ which is especially good for poor, dry soils, conditions which are also tolerated by Lavender ‘Sidonie’. In such situations, the handsome, ferny foliage of the Nandina turns to warm orange colours in winter.

Euphorbias are also good companions for Lavender ‘Sidonie’. Plant it a little behind the emerald green flowered, dark green foliaged Euphorbia ‘Kea’ or the slightly taller growing Euphorbia ‘Silver Swan’ which has large cream flower heads and variegated grey-green foliage.

Other lavenders look good with Lavender ‘Sidonie’, especially if you gather together several different shades of blue. Add several different rosemaries too, such as upright growing ‘Mozart’ and ground covering ‘Mason’s Finest’, both of which have blue flowers, and the white flowered ‘Alba’, and you will have great fragrances whenever you brush against the foliage as well as a visual delight.
