If you've got sunshine and very well drained soils in your garden you will value Leucadendron Tokyo Red for the colour it provides over many months and its ability to thrive during periods of drought without any extra watering. This is a bushy Leucadendron, growing less than a metre high. About all the attention it needs is annual pruning after flowering, removing about one third of the growth - this will ensure its bushy and robust and colourful throughout the following season.
Use Tokyo Red among other low growing, robust shrubs in sunny garden areas - against a house wall, around a courtyard, on a sunny bank, even on a sandhill - Leucadendrons are great for beach gardens where they combine well with grevilleas. Tokyo Red and Grevillea Robyn Gordon are a great pairing for a coastal garden. On a sunny, well drained bank where a low maintenance but highly attractive cover planting is required, plant groups of three or more of Tokyo Red and other leucadendrons with groups of Echium fastuosum, Rhapiolepsis Snow Maiden, Grevillea Red Cloud and Grevillea Robyn Gordon, bold Cordylines such as Red Star for contrast and taller growing Anigozanthos.
