This newly available perennial is a stand out foliage plant. It grows just 60 centimetres tall, but the broad leaves are so bold and sculptural that it attracts far more attention than many much bigger plants. Ligularia ‘Britt Marie Crawford’ looks stunning among other foliage plants, such as Japanese maples, the plum coloured small tree Cercis ‘Forest Pansy’, hostas and grasses. It will grow happily in light shade to full sun. In sunny situations it will need to be kept well watered and is probably best where there’s a little shade during the hottest part of the day, or mix it with taller growing foliage plants which will provide a little shade, such as Canna ‘Tropicanna’ or Canna ‘Tropical Sunburst’. When grown in good light Ligularia ‘Britt Marie Crawford’ looks stunning combined with the bronze tussock Carex testacea, Yucca ‘Garland’s Gold’ and richly coloured flowering perennials such as Cosmos ‘Hot Chocolate’ (which smells as well as looks like chocolate), Alstroemeria ‘Inca Tropic’, Eucomis ‘Sparkling Burgundy’, single flowered, low growing dahlias and dazzling daisy flowers such as Bidens, Coreopsis or Heleniums.
Ligularia ‘Britt Marie Crawford’ is also an exceptional container plant. For something which will really stop people in their tracks, and provide you with enormous pleasure, plant several in a large, broad, deep red or black container.
