It’s the layers of fine foliage that give Nandina ‘Gulfstream’ such a distinctive appearance and make it so interesting to contrast with bold foliage and bright flowers in the garden. Try it with other foliage plants, such as Juniperus ‘Aorangi Gold’ and Carex testacea for an appealing textural planting that won’t mind how cold it gets in winter and will look fantastic throughout the colder months, and for the rest of the year too for that matter. It also looks very handsome growing beside Cordyline ‘Sundance’ and if several of each are planted in groups together the impact is increased. (/p>
The red winter colours of ‘Gulfstream’ make it intriguing to grow in front of shrubs and small trees with bright berries that linger into winter - crab-apples for instance, and with plants that have burgundy evergreen foliage, such as ground covering Loropetalum ‘China Pink’, cabbage trees ‘Red Star’ and ‘Purple Tower’ or a background hedge or clipped group of Dodonaea viscosa ‘Purpurea’.
