Phormium Platts Black
Phormium cookianum 'Platts Black'
Non-fading flax

Platt’s Black has remained one of the most popular flaxes for many years because it has richly coloured, purple black foliage which doesn’t fade with age. But, as with all the coloured foliage flaxes, it develops and retains its very best leaf colourings when given fertiliser and the old foliage trimmed off.

Flaxes such as ‘Platt’s Black’ can look stunning as background plants for perennial borders, something which they discovered in the best English gardens some time ago. It’s also striking with other native plants - as a focal point among bronze grasses and slender Pseudopanax crassifolius for instance, or mingling with small leaf coprosmas or larger ones with bright foliage colours such as Coprosma ‘Green and Gold’. Adventurous gardeners seeking a modern style and with a sunny, well drained situation to plant, will find ‘Platt’s Black’ useful for combining with succulents and grasses.
