Phormium Sunset Dreams - Brilliant foliage colour all year - The bright and cheerful colours of this Phormium (flax) make it ideal for planting in combination with other native plants which have attractive foliage. In a low maintenance border it could mingle with variegated Pittosporums or Lophomyrtus which have green, white and pink foliage. For a bold effect in a coastal garden try ‘Sunset Dreams’ in combination with several other brightly coloured flaxes, including ‘Merlot’ which has dark burgundy foliage, and Coprosmas ‘Painter’s Palette’, ‘Green & Gold’ and ‘Pink Splendour’.
Remember that feeding flaxes and removing the old leaves keeps them at their colourful best. A green background is useful for setting off very colourful foliage plants such as Phormium ‘Sunset Dreams’ and it looks good in front of a hedge of deep green Pittosporum ‘Mountain Green’ or light green Dodonaea viscosa.
Ground cover plants which create interest with Phormium ‘Sunset Dreams’ include Gazania ‘Sunset Jane’, Lithodora ‘Grace Ward’ and Rosmarinus ‘Lockwood de Forest’.
