The classic, dark, denim blue flowers with black bases make you wonder if this is the sort of flower a fashion designer would create if given the opportunity. Such colours mingle charmingly in the garden and this exceptionally free flowering plant is great to grow among all sorts of other beautiful summer flowering perennials. A good choice as a companion plants is Echinacea ‘Kim’s Knee High’, with deep pink daisy flowers surrounding prominent, dark coloured cones. Also good to grow with Salvia ‘Blue and Black’ is Guara ‘So White’, which has masses of little white flowers on long, slender stems throughout summer.
It’s also charming grown among pink alstroemerias, in the foreground of Canna ‘Tropical Sunburst’ or among groundcovers such as Brachycombe ‘Break O’Day’. For something a little different, combine Salvia ‘Blue and Black’ with golden flowered kangaroo paws such as Anigozanthus ‘Bush Gold’, Gazania ‘Sunset Jane’ and the beautiful blue flowered, trailing groundcover Convolvulus mauritanicus which, just like the salvia, flowers all summer.
