Shasta daisies have always been beautiful but lately they’re even more appealing, thanks to new varieties such as ‘Highland Dream’ which is lower growing (around 60 cm), strong stemmed (no staking is required) and long flowering. The first flowers start in early summer and they will often carry on for a long period, even into autumn. Cutting off old flowers at the base of the stem will help prolong flowering.
The bright white flowers of ‘Highland Dream’ make an attractive combination with blue flowers, such as those of Salvia ‘Aztec Blue’, Heliotrope ‘Baby Marine’ or Felicia ‘Golden Sapphire’. It can also be used effectively as a foreground planting to shrubs such as Dichroa ‘Blue Sapphires’ and the unusual Fuchsia ‘Gartenmeister’ which has scarlet flowers and bronze-red leaves. Mix it up with white and cream flowers for a cool summer effect, perhaps something along the lines of Gaura ’So White’, Alstroemeria ‘Inca Ice’ and Hemerocallis ‘Arctic Snow’ which is a compact and free flowering daylily.
