Versatile Canna ‘Tropical Sunburst’ will mix just as happily with cold-hardy flowering perennials as it does with sub-tropical plants such as bananas, bird-of-paradise and ornamental taros. It also looks fetching with some of our native foliage plants - try it with the green and bronze foliage of Cordyline ‘Sundance’, colourful flaxes (Phormium) such as pink and bronze ‘Pink Splendour’ or the tiny green foliage and slender, tangled stems of Muehlenbeckia astonii.
There are many flowering plants which can be combined with “Tropical Splendour’ to create pleasing garden scenes. Try perennials, such as Salvia ‘Blue and Black’ or Gaura varieties ‘Siskiyou Pink’ and ‘So White’, or you could mix it with pink marguerite daisies including ‘Summit Pink’. Bold, summer flowering bulbs are another option and they could include Asiatic and Oriental lilies, calla lilies, jockeys’ caps (Tigridia) and the tropical looking yet cold hardy Eucomis ‘Sparkling Burgundy’.
‘Tropical Sunburst’ is also a spectacular plant in containers. It will need a good size pot, however, and lots of water and food, then it will grow large and lush over summer and create a much talked about feature.
