This outstanding tall shrub puts on a remarkable flower display in winter and early spring. At that time of year there are lots of very large single white flowers with masses of prominent yellow stamens in the centre. A little like a big poached egg, but far more beautiful. When not in flower this beautiful Chinese native is still charming, thanks to the deep green foliage and reddish stems.
Gordonia ‘Moonlight Magic’ can be mingled with low growing, white flowered shrubs for a dramatic monochromatic look. Try it with Osmanthus ‘Pearly Gates’, or with white Daphne ‘Alba’ which will provide lots of heavenly fragrance and flowers at the same time the Gordonia is in full bloom. For contrast of foliage, plant Nandina ‘Gulfstream’ in front of Gordonia ‘Moonlight Magic’. For contrast of flower, plant it at the rear of Clianthus ‘Kaka King’. For a mixed shrub border of considerable interest, combine ‘Moonlight Magic’ with Michelia ‘Mixed Up Miss’, Michelia ‘Bubbles’ and camellias.
