Sometimes foliage can be even more effective than flowers. This is certainly the case with Heuchera ‘Amethyst Mist’ which has such striking, deep wine coloured foliage that it gets more attention than most flowering plants. If it’s a dramatic garden statement you’re after, the trick is to mix Heuchera ‘Amethyst Mist’ with striking flowers - for instance, low growing red roses, Cosmos ‘Hot Chocolate’ or hot coloured Alstroemerias in a sunny spot, boysenberry coloured impatiens in the shade. Yes, they’re radically different conditions, but Heucheras are surprisingly adaptable to varying light conditions. What they must have to go on performing well is a rich soil which doesn’t dry out. Heuchera ‘Amethyst Mist’ in front of pretty ferns such as the native Asplenium bulbiferum is another idea for shade, as is combining it with the green, spotted foliage of the similar looking Tiarella ‘Crow Feather’ or silver and green Pulmonarias.
In a sunny container, there are numerous options with Heuchera ‘Amethyst Mist’. On its own in a terracotta pot it looks striking, as it does mixed with the deep chocolate coloured foliage of the succulent Aeonium ‘Schwartzkopf’. Another good container idea is to plant Heuchera ‘Amethyst Mist’ with dark foliage Cordylines such as ‘Purple Tower’. If it’s a bright, tropical look you’re after, combine Heuchera ‘Amethyst Mist’ with a red foliage bromeliad in a shiny, dark blue pot.
