There’s nothing wrong with being old fashioned when it comes to dwarf perennials with beautiful flowers, such as the outstanding new Iberis ‘Mauve Ice’. It’s on the diminutive side, growing to just 20 centimetres, but this makes it all the more appealing for when it’s massed with flowers, from spring to summer, the effect is like icing on a cake. Needless to say, the more the number of Iberis ‘Mauve Ice’ the more enchanting the picture.
Full sun, good drainage and good soil are the main needs of this little charmer. How you use it in the garden is up to you, but you might like to try it with low growing roses, even miniatures, in white, mauve or pink colours. It mingles successfully with grey foliage plants, of which Stachys byzantina is a good one, and with sky blue flowers such as larkspurs and campanulas, English lavenders such as ‘Foveaux Storm’ and the sprawling Lithodora ‘Grace Ward’. It’s particularly eye catching when seen alongside the ornamental strawberries (Frageria) with light and bright pink flowers, such as ‘Lipstick and ‘Pink Perfection’. These put on a great flower display throughout spring and summer and are effective ground covers.
White flowers are pretty with Iberis ‘Mauve Ice’ too and some suitable and pleasing low growing ones include Parahebe ‘Snowcap’ and Dianthus, and annuals such as alyssum, violas and begonias.
In the foreground of Marguerite daisies is another idea for planting ‘Mauve Ice’. Don’t plant them too close. or the Iberis will get overwhelmed, but this is a good way to play the colour combination game, seeing how appealing it is to have pink or white marguerites such as ‘Sugar Cheer’, ‘Sunrise Rose’, ‘Sugar Crystals’ and ‘Summer Melody’ to further enhance the charms of Iberis ‘Mauve Ice’.
